Brooklyn meets Brazil in the Brookzill’s Debut Album

What happens when Brooklyn’s old school hip hop meets Brazil’s tropical beats? DJ-producer Prince Paul (De La Soul), MC Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets), musician Don Newkirk (The Dix), and São Paulo’s MC Rodrigo Brandão aka Gorila Urbano (Mamelo Sound System) say: BROOKZILL!

The project originated a decade ago, when Paul journeyed to São Paulo and discovered a musical chemistry with Brandão. The duo vowed to work on an album combining their respective styles. Eventually, the two invited MC Ladybug Mecca who, like Brandão, is also fluent in Portuguese and whose father was a Brazilian jazz musician. From there, Newkirk was added and BROOKZILL! became an official supergroup.

On their debut album, Throwback to the Future, which is available in digital, CD and limited edition vinyl, the quartet creates a tropical soundscape over Ladybug and Brandão’s rhymes, along with a quintessential guest-artist list which includes Count Bass D, Del The Funky Homosapien, DJs Kid Koala & Mr. Len, Brian Jackson, and a number of Brazilian musicians like Juçara Marçal, Thiago França, Fafá de Belém, Kiko Dinucci, and Rodrigo Ogi.

“To me, BROOKZILL! is a throwback to why I started my whole career: good music is good music, regardless of what the language is, what the culture is,” Paul said in a statement. “This record stands by what I’ve always stood by. It might not be what you’re familiar with. But for some reason, you just like it ’cause it’s good. It shouldn’t have a face on it, it should just be felt.”

Stream it loud and dare you not shake your booty.
